Olympian Michael Phelps has released a statement in reaction to a picture and article published in the News of the World showing him smoking marijuana. He says his behavior was “regrettable” and that he used “bad judgement”. He went on to say,
“I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
This got me thinking that this isn’t the first time our golden boy has cut loose after an Olympic run. In November 2004, fresh off 6 gold 2 bronze medals in Athens, Phelps was arrested for DUI.
Later in an interview Phelps claimed the incident was “isolated” and that he “let myself down and my family down… I think I let a lot of people in the country down.”
He is young and obviously, like all of us he has made some mistakes. His have been much more publicised than most. Phelps has now been in the public eye for well over 10 years. If anything Michael needs to keep that in mind.
A little advice Michael. Next time you plan to go on a party binge and smoke dope in front of hundreds of college students remember that everyone on the planet has a camera phone and tabloids are willing to pay big bucks for photos of celebrities and athletes acting like idiots. If you want to have a good time and unwind a bit, go for it. Just do it in the privacy of your home without a crowd of wannabe paparazzi around you.
