Serena Williams reached two milestones with her win over Russia’s Elena Dementieva in the semifinals of the Australian Open. The first, and most obvious, a chance at her 10th Grand Slam title. The second is that Serena has surpassed retired golfer, Annika Sorenstam, as the leader in career prize money earned in women’s professional sports.
At her retirement Sorenstam had raked in an earnings total of $22,573,192. Serena has now earned $22,725,475 in her 14-year career. On reaching this achievement, Williams had this to say,
“It’s amazing how much women’s tennis has grown since I joined the Tour fourteen years ago. I am very proud to have reached this milestone for me, my family and all women athletes out there. This achievement really shows that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything.”
