Cooley Gets Schooled By Fitzgerald

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

images28Check out this blog entry by Chris Cooley. It’s pretty funny and refreshing to see a guy who isn’t afraid to laugh at himself a little.

Here is the video evidence that proves he really did get punked by Larry Fitzgerald at the ProBowl.

I’m just not sure why Cooley is so shocked by Fitzgerald passing him by in favor of Anquan Boldin. Cooley, as a tight end for the Washington Redskins, is basically a glorified o-lineman who has permission to run routes and catch passes.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s great at his job. Obviously, or he wouldn’t have been in the Pro Bowl in the first place. But, the big boys up front get punked by the guys scoring the touchdowns all the time. So, if Cooley ever had any identity crisis over his position on the field (are TE’s receivers or linemen???) I think Fitzgerald pretty much cleared it up for him.

Favre Retires

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

images15Brett Favre has announced his retirement from professional football after 18 seasons. After a swarm of attention last year after retiring then having a change of heart just as training camp began the Green Bay Packers traded Favre to the New York Jets.

Favre is one of those gritty, stubborn, good ol’ boys who played the game his way- tough and 110%. He didn’t always say the right thing or look pretty playing the game but more often than not he got the job done by way of sheer willpower.

He leaves professional football having created some memorable moments for fans and though his shoes as a quarterback may be filled, don’t look for his place as a unique and honorable character within his sport to be filled anytime soon.

The NFL won’t be as compelling, exciting or as entertaining without him

$10 Comp for Comcast Customers

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Comcast has very generously agreed to compensate viewers in Tuscon who unwittingly viewed 30 seconds of a porn flick during the 4th quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl with a $10 credit on their next bill.

10 lousy bucks. Are they serious???

Not that any dollar amount is going to make up for the awkwardness and horror that must have ensued in thousands of Tuscon homes that evening but the least the company could do is recognize their error with an appropriate response.

I would expect that they would compensate customers with the price of their February bill, you’d think it’s the least they could do.

I’m curious though. How did Comcast decide on the amount of $10? Perhaps it’s $1 per inch of giant schlong that swayed across television screens that night.

Hot List

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

A couple of last points to make regarding the Super Bowl…

  1. You’ve got to love Ben Roethlisberger for giving love to his O-Line after the game, even though his front 5 had him scrambling the field all night. I have a soft spot for the big guys up front (so much so that I married one!) and it’s great to see them get credit for something other than an off-sides or holding penalty. Big Ben is not only a great quarterback but a smart leader as well, because nothing motivates a lineman more than knowing his quarterback has his back.
  2. If you’ve never listened to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio you should start. His commentary is smart, funny and thought provoking. This morning he made a good case that the Steelers should replace the Cowboys as “America’s Team”. I tried to get an excerpt of his comments but here is the gist of it. He basically said that if Americans are lazy, spoiled, prima donnas that can’t deliver when it counts then the Cowboys should indeed be America’s team. If Americans are honest, hardworking, down-to-earth people who know how to win when it counts then the Steelers should be America’s team. I don’t know about you, but I vote for the Steelers.
  3. Is it just me or is Steeler head coach Mike Tomlin hot? He was interviewed after the game with his wife and three kids. There is nothing sexier than a man who loves his family!!!images1

Super Bore Turns Thriller In Fourth Quarter

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

56627285For the first 3 quarters the Super Bowl wasn’t exactly captivating competition at its best. The stats and the score both favored the Steelers and by the end of the third quarter it seemed a forgone conclusion that Pittsburgh would walk away as Super Bowl Champs without Arizona even trying to get in their way.

Then in the fourth quarter something miraculous happened. The Arizona Cardinals decided to show up and make a game out of it!

For anyone watching, football fan or not, you have to admit that there is nothing quite as exciting, or as entertaining as a great football game.

I had no particular interest in who won the game but in those final minutes watching the clock tick down I was on the edge of my seat cheering the Cardinals on. Not because I am a Cardinals fan but because I’m a fan of great competetion, great athleticism and great football.

This Super Bowl delivered on all three fronts!

NBC Still Trying To Sell Super Bowl Ad Space

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Word is that NBC is still negotiating to fill valuable ad space during Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast. Super Bowl advertising regulars of the past such as General Motors and FedEx have opted out of purchasing any commercial spots. While Budweiser will be the big game’s top advertiser for the 9th year running. I guess it’s true, people do drink more when the economy is bad.

Maybe NBC should rethink their decision to reject an ad PETA created to be aired during the Super Bowl.

On second thought, maybe not. If the FCC freaked out about a quick flash of  Janet Jackson’s boob they’re likely to have a stroke over this!!

Super Bore Sunday

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I’m one of those people who believe in a the big 5 holidays- Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Fourth of July and Super Bowl Sunday.

It shames me to admit that this year I just can’t seem to bring myself to get into the “Super Bowl Spirit”. Is it just me or is this year’s Super Bowl shaping up into a major snoozefest?

There doesn’t seem to be any big debate on who will win the game, with Pittsburgh the hands down favorite. There is no buzz on Super Bowl commercial spots, probably because with the economy in the toilet corporations aren’t lining up to shell out the bucks for the ad space and production costs for a flashy, in your face Super Bowl Ad.

I am excited about Jennifer Hudson singing the National Anthem. And Springsteen will no doubt sound great, but I don’t hold out high hopes for him delivering a knockout halftime show.

So where does that leave me in in terms of the Super Bowl enjoyment scale? I’m putting all my eggs in one basket - the food. I’ve been on a strict meal plan since January 1st so bring on the chips, dips, wings and drinks!

Sports Stars Scoop Up Swag at Sundance

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Last week I mentioned that the documentary film, Tyson, on the life of boxer and headline maker Mike Tyson would be premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. Iron Mike did make a pit stop at Sundance for the premiere of Tyson but he wasn’t the only athlete to brave the cold and check out the festival.

Younghollwood.com was there and met up with Barry Zito and Brian Wilson of the San Fracisco Giants, Kyle Korver and Devon Williams of the Utah Jazz, Nate Jones of the Miami Dolphins and Chris Cooley of the Washington Redskins who were in Park City to take in the festivities, party it up and of course pick up some freebies at the giveaway booths.
